On a Short Lead: Control, Safety, and the Origin of Leashed Dogs - With Dr. Neil Humphrey, PhD

Societies traditionally used leashes to restrain dogs during activities like guarding valuables and hunting game. The leash's usage changed, however, beginning in Victorian England to promote safe movement through urban space. Restricting dogs safeguarded humans from biting while keeping dogs secure from dangerous situations ranging from neighborhood poisoners to speeding motorcars. In this talk, Neil will explore some of the rationales for—and benefits of—Victorian leashing that led this technology to become a common component of modern dog culture.
